Help us demonstrate cooperation and innovation at landscape scale to give a future to Transilvania’s unique wildlife-rich farmed landscapes.

ADEPT is seeking funding for Angofa Valley Demonstration Farm.

€200.000 needed to develop a demonstration farm and farm school, which can also act as a visitor centre, only 5 km from the municipality of Sighișoara.

Project Overview

Beneficiaries

Târnava Mare small-scale farming communities

Objective

Combining innovation and tradition for greater profitability of High Nature Value farming

Outcome

Maintenance of landscape features and threatened habitats
Better incomes to small-scale farmers

Project Objectives

Fauna and Flora International (FFI) and Grass Valley Trust have generously funded Fundația ADEPT to buy 200ha of HNV grassland in the valley of Angofa (location of an abandoned village), near Sighișoara, plus the associated farmhouse and schoolhouse. Loans and donations from Friends of ADEPT in London have enabled is to buy and breeding herd of 65 pedigree Aberdeen Angus livestock.

ADEPT plans to use the Angofa valley to demonstrate concrete actions for habitat restoration and protection, for protection of biodiversity, under management which is suited to small-scale High Nature Value farming.

This demonstration farm will show how to maintain landscape features, threatened habitats especially wildflower-rich haymeadows, and at the same time bring better incomes to small-scale farmers, encouraging them to continue traditional farming.

Beneficiaries

We will carry out mutually beneficial cooperative management with 10-15 neighbouring farmers on 500ha. We will train 90 farmers per year in nature-friendly management, and in marketing linked to nature value.

Project Location

Fundatia ADEPT, funded by Fauna & Flora International and the Grass Valley Trust, has purchased 200 hectares within the municipality of Sighisoara, only 3 km from the edge of the town. The land includes the site of the former village of Angofa, of which only two buildings remain – a former Austro-Hungarian schoolhouse and a farmhouse. The high nature value of the land, and its location, make an excellent for the delivery of outdoor and nature based activities and classes to schoolchildren from across the region.

Project Updates

We have bought the farmhouse and 200 ha of surrounding farmland, and stocked the land with a valuable breeding herd. We have brought the other 15 land owners in the valley together for the first time to cooperate in the management of the valley.

Key Activities

• to show farmers and policy makers how small-scale farming can still be economically viable
• carry out landscape-scale habitat and species mapping to assist conservation farming
• implement cooperative conservation management with 10-15 neighbouring farmers on 500ha.
• carry out habitat restoration work that shows how cooperative planning and investment can reduce individual investment and help small-scale farmers to meet sustainable farming targets
• train 90 farmers per year in nature-friendly management, and in marketing linked to nature value.
• create farm-based nature trails including interpretation signs, and a mobile phone app to give access to more information.

Our Project: Angofa Valley Farm

The remarkable habitat and species diversity of the Angofa Valley, and of the Târnava Mare landscape in general, is dependent on continued traditional management by small-scale farming communities, and on cattle farming to maintain haymeadows. As long as traditional management provides decent local incomes, incentives will maintain the management and the farmers will preserve the habitats and associated species, as they have done for centuries.

The project will demonstrate innovative techniques, products and cooperative management methods to protect the biodiversity of grasslands especially haymeadows. It will:

  • establish a demonstration farm, to show farmers and policy makers how small-scale farming can still be economically viable, by a mixture of landscape-scale cooperation, well-targeted agri-environment payments, innovative low-input management techniques, and better marketing;
  • carry out landscape-scale habitat and species mapping in order to include connectivity and mosaic landscape elements in biodiversity assessments;
  • develop and implement cooperative conservation management with 10-15 neighbouring farmers, on 500ha.
  • carry out concrete habitat restoration work and common use infrastructure that allows better conservation management, showing how cooperative planning and investment can reduce individual investment and help small-scale farmers to meet agri-environment criteria;
  • use the farm and neighbouring schoolhouse to train 90 farmers per year in nature-friendly management, and in marketing linked to nature value. The farm and schoolhouse will also be used for wider environmental research, education and communication;
  • create farm-based nature trails including interpretation signs, and a mobile phone app to give access to more information;
  • complete a mountain bike trail link so that users of the existing mountain bike trail from Sighișoara have direct access to the school;
  • use latest digitisation to develop mapping and to assist data visualisation and data gathering for farmers and researchers, and promote access to interesting information of the area for visitors. This will be replicable in other areas, to assist conservation projects more widely in Romania.
