On 19 August 2017, ADEPT together with NoMad organised the fourth edition of TBT Race, a national mountain bike competition, starting and finishing in Saschiz. More than 1200 participants (730 racers and their families) attended the event.
The race is an opportunity to explore the local Saxon history and culture, every year we start and finish the route in one of the 8 villages connected through this bike trail network: Viscri – Bunești – Criț – Meșendorf – Cloașterf – Saschiz – Archita – Daia.
ADEPT aims to offer unique experiences to visitors coming to Sighisoara – Tarnava Mare area, attract new tourists in the area, increase local income by promoting green responsible tourism.
Nearly 750 bikers entered in the competition, coming from various areas of Romania, but also from Norway, Germany, Hungary, UK, France and USA. We worked with approximately 100 volunteers in the organization of this competition. The news articles and TV appearances reached a national audience, being disseminated by media channels with national coverage.
The race course had two a length of 80 km.
The race was also a very good promotor of the fortified churches in the area, as the competitors went inside their inner courtyards, for water and food supplies. We have also organized lunches and dinners not only for the competitors but also for the visitors, giving thus the chance of local producers and chefs not only to get extra incomes and set up connections with potential tourists. During the period of pre and after race, all the local guesthouses were fully booked. Before and after the race, the visitors have the opportunity to explore the area and indulge into its particular charm. We organise different activities and walking trips in the area, meeting the local producers and craftsmen.
Since we started this project, a number of 15 new guesthouses were open in these 8 villages, 4 bike-rental places and around 80 bikes available in the area.
TBT Race is more than just a cycling contest. It is part of our ongoing effort to protect and preserve a unique cultural landscape in Europe. For more information about the TBT Race, please visit our dedicated website: www.tbtrace.ro.
